Jefferson Park AllianceThe Jefferson Park Alliance is a coalition of individuals and groups dedicated to South Seattle’s Jefferson Park. Our mission is to create a park that can once again be loved and used by the community, and reflects the intent of the Olmsted Brothers’ plan. First Saturday of each month. Bring tools and gloves if you have them!
Jefferson Park is in the process of a major revitalization, due in no small part to the efforts of JPA volunteers. The park received $8 million from the ProParks funding levy. A new gymnasium was completed in 2004, new walking paths around the golf courses and along Cheasty Boulevard are complete; garden beds flourish on the hill; Work on decommissioning of the North Reservoir and capping of the South Reservoir are well under way. The added space will encompass natural landscaping, picnic areas, play areas, and stunning views of Seattle and Elliot Bay.

Garden Party, Saturday June 2ndThe gardens in Jefferson Park need some love! The warm weather and lack of rain mean we need help watering as well as weeding. If you would enjoy a morning in the park with friends, please join us this Saturday, June 2nd, from 10am-1pm. Meet at the View Overlook picnic table west of the driving range. Please bring your own favorite gardening tools and gloves if you have them. We bring some extras, so don't let lack of tools, gloves or know-how stop you. We bring beverages and treats to share around the picnic table -- turning a work party into a social event. The gardens in the park are on the Beacon Hill Garden Tour route this year (Sunday, June 24th), so help us put a good face on it. Then get out and tour some of the best gardens in your neighborhood! Important datesGardening Party: Sunday afternoon, May 6, from 1 to 4 PM
Please join us at Jefferson Park for a gardening work party. New volunteers and longtime gardeners all welcome. We'll meet at the picnic table at the top of the viewpoint (west of the driving range). Please bring gloves, your favorite weeding tools and hand-pruners if you have them. Additional tools provided.
PLEASE NOTE the change in date and time from the usual morning meeting time. Tour of Bradner Garderns: Saturday, June 9 at 1 PM
Potluck picnic lunch is at noon in the pavilion at the center of Bradner Gardens Park, followed by a personal tour of the park by Joyce Moty beginning at 1. If you want to carpool, contact Marianna Wickmann at BeaconMountainPlayground@gmail.com. Read more about this wonderful neighborhood park at http://www.cityofseattle.net/parks/Arts/bradner/bradner.htm
From Marianna's e-mail about it:
I recently spent an inspiring afternoon with Joyce Moty of Bradner Gardens Park. She took me through the park on a walking tour, telling me the history of how their many wonderful features came to be. Some examples if you’re not familiar: They have a windmill, large scale water feature/drainage swale, green buildings, community created art fences, solar roof panels, recycled tractor cum interactive play structure, and much more. I learned so much… like that their solar panels are so effective that they not only support their own power needs, they are an actual power generating station for Seattle City Light! She told me about the different grants they obtained and strategic partnerships they forged (tilth, master gardeners, UW design/build program, green power @ seattle city light, and many more) to bring their unique and idealistic vision to life.
As I listened to Joyce tell the story, I was struck by the parallels with our own community-led development on parks department land. I think that hearing about this on-going success story from one of the group’s co-chairs would be a shot of inspiration for our group. Joyce is a fan of Jefferson Park and the JPA mission, and has agreed to give our group a tour and talk. John Barber, Vera Ing recommended for Parks BoardCouncilman David Della has recommended John Barber and Vera Ing for the two open Parks Board positions. Jim Anderson is no longer in the running. John Barber will come by Saturday at about 1 PM to meet with us after the work party. We don't have any info on Vera Ing yet. E-mail from Richard Conlin: Thank you for your message about the two new Parks Board members to be appointed by the City Council. Councilmember David Della, as Chair of the Parks, Education, Libraries, and Labor Committee, has reviewed the resumes that have been submitted, interviewed candidates, and recommended two nominees for Council consideration. Councilmember Della is recommending John Barber and Vera Ing for the positions. While there were many highly-qualified candidates, I agree with Councilmember Della that these are two highly-qualified candidates, with a diversity of experience, support from community members and organizations, and passion for parks and open space. I look forward to enthusiastically supporting their nominations. Garden work party Saturday, April 7This Saturday April 7, 10 AM to 1 PM, is our monthly garden work party in the park. We will be dividing and transplanting perennials to fill in bare spots left by the harsh, dry summer of '06. If you want to know more about what survives in drought conditions, come help in the garden!
And at 1 PM you can meet two candidates for the Seattle Parks Board! |
